This course is designed for advanced study of math. It is based on the Challenging Word Problems Book 3 and Unleash the Math Olympian in You. Homework is required.
There is an emphasis on basic computational skills (i.e. number operations, fractions, decimals, and percent's) coupled with critical thinking and problem solving. Creative problem solving is centered in the bar model drawing methodology. To visually represent problems students are taught to translate them into bar models which help to both understand the concepts and to develop a good solution strategy, as well as serving as a bridge to algebraic thinking.
Concepts covered:
Number theory: Order of operations, Multiplication/Division properties, Exponents, Writing Equations, Sequences/Patterns.
Geometry: Perimeter and Area, Volume, Length, Cuboids.
Art of Problem Solving methods: Continue to apply previous methods such as systematic listing, models, replace and restate with variables in order to solve complex word problems.
